Poverty Point.
On our way to
Vidalia, we drove to Poverty Point State Historic Site, composed of a complex
of concentric ridges and five mounds built by ancient bird revering people. It is estimated that it took about 5 million
hours of labor to build.
We took a
tram ride with a guide who explained and talked about the ridges and each of
the mounds.
One mound is
in the shape of a bird with a wingspan of 640 feet. There is a museum showing the date line believing
to be 1700-700 B.C. The guide said one
mound is as large as a football field.
The museum
displays some of the artifacts excavated at the ongoing digging site and we
watched a video about the history. The site was discovered by a farmer and
because of farming over the years, the mounds and site have lost height.
We would
recommend this as a side trip. There is
some parking space for 1 or 2 rigs;
might call ahead.
There is also
a self- driving tour for small rigs.
